Serine/threonine protein kinase PLK1, also known as polo-like kinase 1 (PLK-1) or serine/threonine protein kinase 13 (STPK13), is an enzyme encoded by PLK1 in humans. PLK1 plays an important role in the initiation, maintenance and completion of mitosis. PLK1 dysfunction may promote carcinogenesis and promote its progression. Overexpression of PLK1 has been found in many human cancers and is associated with poor prognosis of cancer. Many studies have shown that the inhibition of PLK1 can lead to cancer cell death by interfering with multiple stages of mitosis. Therefore, PLK1 is expected to become a potential target for cancer therapy. Diseases associated with PLK1 include gonococcal keratitis and gliomas.
